Let me start with this: I know this is a hot take. I know not everyone is going to agree with me. But someone has to say it and it might as well be someone who has spent time navigating corporate life, observing everything from the C-suites to the intern pool. Casual office wear is turning corporate America into a sloppy mess. And it it literally hurting your own self-image. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
I\u2019m not against comfort. I\u2019m not against self-expression. But what we\u2019re seeing now isn\u2019t about comfort or style \u2014 it\u2019s a slow erosion of self-respect, professionalism, and, frankly, standards. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
There was a time not so long ago when going to the office meant something; even having a meeting meant something. It was a place of pride, a place where you brought your best self – including your wardrobe. Leaving the house meant being ready to face the world in a different way. Show people a bit about yourself before you even say anything. Dressing up for wasn\u2019t about pretending to be someone you\u2019re not. It was about showing that you took yourself seriously. That you had respect for the people around you. That you had respect for yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Today, too many people show up looking as though they rolled out of bed. Wrinkled sweatshirts, scuffed sneakers, yoga pants, oversized hoodies \u2014 and worse, the same outfit they wore to binge-watch Netflix on the couch. And perhaps this is who you are, and to that I say keep going. But for those of us who know presenting ourselves in a put together way this is your reminder to DO BETTER.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It is time to stop confusing “casual” with “careless.” It is time to stop trying to be “relatable” by showing up “disheveled.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Here\u2019s the thing about humans: we mirror. Whether we realize it or not, we take cues from each other. When you show up to your day in an intentional, well-crafted outfit, it elevates the room. People sit up straighter. Conversations sharpen. Energy shifts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But when the majority of people are dressed like they don\u2019t want to be awake the energy flatlines. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
And it\u2019s not just about appearances \u2014 it\u2019s about behavior. When you don\u2019t dress like you matters, you start treating life like it doesn\u2019t. When you don\u2019t look in the mirror and see a put-together, capable, sharp human being, you start second-guessing your worth. It seeps in. Makeup that makes you feel bright and awake, cleanly shaven. These things are not<\/em> superficial, they are communication tools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When you look put together, you feel<\/em> put together. When you feel put together, you perform better. People respond to that. Respect it. Trust it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That\u2019s what so many people are missing: dressing well is not about vanity. It\u2019s about presence. It\u2019s about showing up fully. It\u2019s a signal to others, but more importantly, to yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The overly casual, default-to-pajamas vibe had its moment. People are waking up. First COVID happened, then remote work and I found myself with very little reason to put effort into my hair, my makeup or my clothes. In addition, I workout a ton, so it was easiest to throw on my workout clothes and go from there without a second thought. However, recently, I have been dressing nicer, doing my hair and I felt so much more myself.
